Opening the train depot allows new source of items like axes, saw, land deeds, mallets, markers, and new items to expand the town to new levels. You will receive an item like you would from a treasure chest but free when you completely serve a visitor.
As you advance to new levels of the town you will be able to run your own train to pick people to visit your town. This is a plus, as those you pick-up only need to be served once in order to get a gift from them.

When train arrives with visitors to your town, serve them to get rewards and increase the level of the town. See the red heart meter? That's the level meter for the town.
Note: Some visitors you may not be able to serve because you do not have that service building yet. Send those away and others in your neighborhood group can pick them up. When they are picked up you will receive a reputation point for each picked up visitor. See below for sample of sending a visitor away.

Repair is done at level 3 and cost 13000 to repair.
After that you will need to upgrade it. You will have two choices, train cap. 1-10 and time that it takes for maintenance between runs.
It uses refine coal and the bars from the smelters. Number of each increases for each level.

Selecting a group town to visit to pick-up people for your town.
Tap on the town's train station to open up the list of people you can pick-up.
Tap on the person you wish to pick-up.
Note: the building they wish to visit and select who you prefer to serve.
The town does not have people you wish to pick-up, you can go back t your town to select a different town. Just tap on the Green train icon to go back.
You can deselect a person if you have limited train or town space and wish to select someone else.
Tap on the train icon to finalize selection, then tap on the green train icon to go home and serve your new arrivals.
Kicking unwanted visitors in your Town
Visitors can be very greedy at times and wish allot from you, as well as wishing to be served at many buildings before giving you a reward. So you may wish to kick some out for others to pick-up by their train. Doing this also helps them out as they only have to serve that person one time to get reward. Which helps you out for kicking them to them, because this adds to the amount of special items that can to traded or sold among the group.

For easy selection of those you wish to kick out see photo below of the Town Hall. As it list all of the visitors wish to be served more that twice. I myself kick out all that wish to be served three times.

You may wish to increase the reputation points first to get to the levels faster or the number of seating for each building. It depends on your playing time and the way you wish to play.
Cost to upgrade goes up by one for each level. Below are samples for each, being that photo was taken while at level 22 the cost to upgrade to level 23 was 22 of each item per building. Note: After an update to the game done in May. Max level has increased and I have not reached the max as of yet. It was level 24, but now the coinage, reputation points and speed of service has increased. It was 30% was max, but now it's still unknown. I'm at level 27 and still working on getting one max out, my reputation is at 45% and still can upgrade more. I'm guess the new max is 50% for each now. The amount of visitors per building remains at 6.

I don't know if it is worth all the trouble of serving people then having to wait 2 to 8 hrs for them to leave. I don't believe you make enough coins our stars to make it worth my while. I have a person in the bed and

The townspeople do take a lot from you, but they also give explosives for the mine, as well as land, barn, and silo expansion materials.
DeleteFor me, they help relieve spaces in my barn. I never want to get rid of anything (hoarder!!) in case I need it later.
If you are looking to make money, you can sell items in your store for more $$, but then you do not get experience pts or free items.
It also helps to get your small personal train and get from people in your neighborhood. The people picked up from other towns only require one shop before they give up the goods, and you have the pick of the litter. Happy Farming!
